What is Clubhouse? Things You Need to Know About this App

Clubhouse is the new invite-only social app. It created quite a buzz for being invite-only (at the moment at least) and as of January 21st, it has a $1 billion valuation.

But what is this app really about? What does it offer? In this post, I’ll quickly walk you through the things you need to know about this hot new app.

Before we get started, I just want to cover something very quickly. A lot of people think Clubhouse just got created in the last couple of weeks, but it hasn’t been like that at all. In fact, Clubhouse was started or founded back in April 2020.

I wanted to check this app for myself and I’m so excited to see where it goes. I love entrepreneurship, and I love innovation. And this app satisfies all of those things.

So, what is Clubhouse?

Clubhouse is a social networking app. But what’s unique about it is that it’s invite-based PLUS it’s audio-only. Right now, it’s available only in Apple, although this might change anytime and be available for Android soon.

It basically runs like a social networking app for a big conference. If you’ve ever been in one, what happens is as you wander around the venue, you’ll see lots of different rooms that you can go into and see speakers.

In the app, there are many rooms to choose from, depending on your interests. You can join these rooms and hear speakers talk about a specific topic. You can also create a room yourself. But remember, before you can do all these, you have to be invited into the app.

How does the invite-only method work?

When you download the app, you can’t use it right away. What you can do is reserve your name and then wait for somebody to let you in. You can also be invited in and you’ll see a text to your phone number with the invitation link.

Once you’re in the app, you can start inviting people. Note that invitations are very limited, with two invites only at the start, but this increases gradually as you use the app. If one of your phone contacts reserves a name, you’ll see the option to let the person in. You can also just send an invite right away.

If the person you want to invite doesn’t appear on your list in Clubhouse, make sure to add this person to your phone contact first.

What are its notable features?

  • You can curate your feed. Once you’re in the app, you can select topics of interest. Rooms related to these topics can show up in your “corridor” (Clubhouse’s lingo for feed) and you can attend the conversation.
  • You can see who is available and what this person is listening to. There’s an option for you to see who is (and was) available in the last 24 hours. And you can join the rooms that they’re listening into.
  • You’re discouraged from screen-recording without permission. I attempted to screen-record for educational purposes. But as soon as I did this, a message popped out telling me that sharing (and recording) a conversation without the speakers’ permission is against the community guidelines. It can lead to suspension actually. Yikes.
  • You can raise your hand to speak up. When you’re in a room, you’ll see a hand icon at the bottom. You can press this if you want to speak up while the conversation is running.

Of course, there are many other features in Clubhouse. I highly recommend you watch the full video so you’ll have an in-depth walkthrough of the app.

Is CLUBHOUSE a fad?

I know some of you think Clubhouse sounds like a bit of a fad. Maybe you’ve had a bit of a bad rep on the other social networks. But I would absolutely encourage you to get started by getting on the platform and experiencing it for yourself.

There are a lot of people with very strong opinions about Clubhouse, but you can’t really see the benefit, even though I’m going to show you all the benefits in the video, you can’t really see the benefit without giving it a go.

So, try the app for yourself. Jump in, give it a go, and make your own decision.
